Last week something for the history books here in the state of Alabama was made, not just for the state but for high school boys basketball. There was seven African American High School Coaches that lead their basketball teams to a State Championship and brought home the blue trophy. These Coaches along with their teams showed great athleticism, heart, detemination and teamwork to win their State Titles. Go figure it all was finished and completed on the last day of Black History Month. We will start from 1A to 7A.
Head Coach Marcuss Barnes and the Pickens County Tornados defeated Lanett 57-55. The Tornados shot 33% from the field, 3FG 28% FT 52% Pickens County had three players scoring in double figers Javion Belle 16pts., Jawan Petty 11pts. and Jah-Marien Latham 10pts.
Head Coach Ervin Starr and the Calhoun Tigers defeated Barbour County 64-61. Coach Starr and the Tigers had a tough game against Barbour County, but Jerdarrian Davison hits a step back 3 pointer and seals the deal for the Tigers. The Tigers shot 42% from the field, 3FG 43% FT 53% and had two players in double figures Jerdarrian Davison 32pts. and Ladarren Mason.
Head Coach Doug Holland and the Pike County Bulldogs defeated Lauderdale County 59-45. Coach Holland and the Bulldogs had this game in the bag early leading 23-18 at the half. The Bulldogs had a lot of bench players that stepped up and hit shots. 41% from the field, 3FG 33% FT 68% and had three players in double figures Andres Burney 21pts., Ian Foster 14pts. and Omar Cumberbatch 12pts.
Head Coach Shumbe Hunter and the Williamson Lions defeated Talladega 68-61. Coach Hunter and the Lions came out strong in the 1st quarter outscoring Talladega 24-9. The 2nd quarter Talladega turned the tables and were only down 31-29 at the half. Williamson never relinquished the lead to Talladega and came out with the victory. The Lions shot 40% from the field, 3FG 38% FT 58% and had three players in double figures Jacameron Horn 18pts., Jordan Bell 11pts. and Clifton Granderson 10pts.
Head Coach Maurice Ford and the Fairfield Tigers defeated Center Point 50-42. Coach Ford and the Tigers lead the entire game and gathered 37 rebounds. The Tigers shot 48% from the field, 3FG 33% FT 63% and had three players in double figures Reginald Perry 13pts., Isaiah Davis 10pts. and Jadarrius Torrance 10pts.
Head Coach Stephen Ward and the Huffman Vikings defeated Bessemer City 56-48. Coach Ward and the Vikings were in a tough fight in the 1st half trailing 31-23. The 2nd half the Vikings outscored Bessemer City by 16 points to bring home the victory. The Vikings shot 49% from the field, 3FG 22% FT 50% and had two players in double figures Dequarrin Ezell 15pts., and James Burgess 11pts.
Head Coach Bryant Johnson and the Lee-Montgomery Generals defeated Mountain Brook 40-38. Coach Johnson and the Generals trailed the Spartans at the half 21-12. The 2nd half belonged to the Generals outscoring the Spartans by 11 points to win the game. The Generals had and extra motivation to win the game, remembering a fellow teammate Rodd Scott. The Tigers shot 38% from the field, 3FG 7% FT 71% and had one player in double figures De’marquiese “Duke” Miles 12pts.
